Dear friends

MONGABAY’s just reported on latest CCAMLR’s decision about the South Antarctic krill and other species fisheries, which can be read here.

It basically follows past years’ CCMLR meetings outcome, with the krill fishery facing most of the scrutiny. None of the effort made by all the stakeholders involved in this fishery, science included, seems to be taken into consideration by the same scientific community. It is not only world’s best managed fishery, but also the one having the largest areas of either protected, or no-fishing activities.

Future annual meetings will be much more contested, possibly the consensus-decision taking approach scraped, and the entire South Antarctic well balanced science-commercial activities clashing each other. Even more when the coming revision of the original Antarctic Treaty is re-visited.

Tharos has extensively reported on these issues, and how geo-political matters will dominate the scene, and CCAMLR future decisions. Please visit our News and Reports Section for more about this.

Have a great day…. this is a unique-best day.

Dear Friends

A 2020 paper contributes to mapping the scientific and patent landscape for biodiversity and innovation in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. It reviewed 116 million patent documents and 64 million families from 134 countries. Europe and USA lead the list of invention patents holders, Tharos ranking 3rd regarding patents family members.

When the data is ranked by species and the number of scientific publications, krill leads thanks to a combination of an increasing number of claims to elements of krill, such as krill oil, and the use of krill as an actual or potential ingredient in a claimed invention, such as a foodstuff, animal feed, pharma or cosmetic.

The proliferation of patent activity across sectors for krill and its implications, predict trends in the krill fishery. Across both scientific and common names for krill, the report identified 150 first filings linked to a total of 1.193 family members worldwide.

In the past few weeks several apocalyptic prophecies have made the headlines anticipating a collapse of the South Antarctic krill fishery. Coincidently, when CCAMLR’s October/November annual meeting is approaching, similar news abounds, historically.

This time the heat has gone up to the level to ask for a full closure of the South Antarctic krill fishery, dump decades of the best science, forgetting the involvement of top-grade universities and research centres, having the best run fishery managed by CCAMLR, fishing companies ascribing to tougher regulations, a full closure of certain fishing areas, limitations on others, tough MPAs, and so many other regulatory obligations.

Now we face the “pandemic” news that, when one krill operator reports up to 35% less catch, as a tsunami, hell flames hit the news using this cyclical phenomenon as the omen of the end of “happy feet”.

Let’s put things in context as this is not the Wild Wild West;

The South Antarctic krill fishery is not a declining fishery.

This fishery is not dominated by the rule of the “strongest”.

It is far away from any Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU), fishing activity.

It has historically shown a cyclical fishing performance… yes, as 2021 season.

While one operator had a poor 2021 fishing season, others enjoyed a good one.

A fishing downturn and/or a one-year dip does not mean it will become a trend.

Operations using large trawlers/high capture models will face it harder.

Modeling a “systemic” 1 000ton per day catch effort trawler… remains elusive.

With 5-decades of catch record, efficiency-corrected, catch remain within known standards.

Latest research asserts how healthy this fishery is.

This is no other than bad politics today monopolizing the narrative.

See here the table of content of THAROS’ latest report showing why you should not take for granted all what has been published.
On the basis of acoustically registered krill swarms along a 1 097nm transect in the area 58 of the Indian Ocean Sector of Antarctic region, the biomass density of krill, their spatial and depth distribution are presented. Presence of krill was not observed north of 60°00′ lat.

One of the 1996 report conclusions, is that during the season the biomass available in the region is low which is very less in comparing with Atlantic Sector of Antarctic region.

Comparing the mean densities estimated from FIBEX acoustic survey for the West Atlantic sector and for the Indian Ocean: West Atlantic sector = 42.36ton km-2 and Indian Ocean sector below 62″s = 3.74ton km-2, around 11 times more krill abundance in area 48.

On a 1:1 comparison, largest biomass was obtained in area 48.3 at 59.73g-2 vs. area 58.4.2 at 2.29gm-2, a 26x difference.

Dear friends, loyal readers and consumers

We appreciate consumer’s eagerness to learn about krill oil, South Korean krill oils recalled brands, how to make a wise purchase, and distinguish real vs. faked krill oil brands. Above all, how we all protect this category from wrongful business practices.

Well… identifying such wrongful activities is not an easy task.

Our July 12th newsletter addressed the brands recalled by KFDA. Thanking RIMFROST, we are clarifying the who’s who on the public photo that put together a recalled brand (JW58), a non-recalled brand (JW100) and RIMFROSTS’s FOS certificate. It is the non-recalled brand (JW100) that used RIMFROST’s oil.

We are referring to JW Pharma. Korean public info indicates that JW krill oil (abbreviation and brand name for Choongwae Pharmaceutical) was produced with krill oil supplied by Ju Yeong NS.

It is a mid-sized Korean pharma company. Their krill oils are not shown on their product listing. Their products they sell were listed at NAVER (typing 중외제약 크릴오일.)

JW Pharma’s JW58 was published by KFDA using Krill Oil from AMF Pharma LLC (AMF). AMF krill Oil is used by other brands also notified by KFDA.

Canadian AMF Pharma does not display krill oil among their product portfolio. AMF’s KFDA import data shows no krill oil imports since 2020.

Our same July 12th newsletter also addressed krill oil manufactures as almost sole FOS-registered companies. As a matter of fact, FOS registry has not only direct krill oil manufacturers, but a large number of intermediate companies.

Non-direct krill oil producers can buy krill oil (or any other krill product) from a FOS-certified factory trawler (or on-land krill oil manufacturer ), and then, would that be the case, re-process the oil to manufacture their own nutraceutical/supplement branded product, which will adhere to their FOS-registered krill oil supplier.

Several of these intermediate companies are third-party certified to prove compliance with the chain of custody and product traceability.

Hence, buying krill oil from a direct manufacturer that is FOS-certified, it goes all along the value chain to the final seller, indicated in the product traceability, and the label.

As you can see, the krill oil ecosystem is composed of few oil producers, and a handful number of intermediate companies down the value chain, offering their own branded krill oils. Some blend with vitamins … and so on.

Latest FOS list seen here, updated July 25th 2021.

When a krill oil manufacturer sells in good faith its krill oils, and the intermediate company decides to blend such oil with other non-krill material for example, how the former keeps control of its offering? What to do?

A question to answer.

Thanks
